Palmate newt Young (Lissotriton helveticus) Formerly (Triturus Helveticus) Controlled Environment. Lying on finger tips of a 6 year old child. Young newt in the image is 20 mm in length. This newt is at the stage where it has just lost the remainders of it's gills that enabled it to live full time under water in the lava stage. It has made the transition to breathing air, and will now need to surface in order to breath. As newts grow they need to shed their skins. They are crepuscular, with activity peaking at dusk and dawn. This secretive newt spends most of the day in thick aquatic vegetation, coming out into open water only after dark. Sale or commercial exchange of palmate newts is prohibited in Britain by the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981.
