Sanderling, (Calidris alba), adults in winter huddled and resting, Sefton Coast, Ainsdale, UK Sanderling, (Calidris alba), adults in winter plumage huddled and resting. Birds are huddled together on a very windy day. Resting from foraging for the last few hours as the tide continues to go out. A very 'high' spring tide had caused the tide to go out much further than previous recent records of spring tides in about 10 years. So there was new ground and abundant food for the birds to forage in. The Sanderling has no hind toe - giving it a distinctive running action, rather like a wind up toy, as it darts away from incoming waves on the waters edge.
