The birds seem to start the bating process with a few tentative flicks of the beak and head through the water. Maybe a bit like us testing the temperature of water before getting in. As with all birds feathers need to be kept in top condition to aid flight and protection. Bathing regularly is part of the birds strategy in keeping feathers in top condition.
